I'm a Corpse Collector in Another World

When people die, they should lie still.

The people of the Jiuzhao Continent don't.

As soon as someone here draws their last breath, their body starts to "ring." If no one comes to collect it within twelve hours, the ringing will drag it out of bed and teach it the way, the people it knows, and where your front door is.

In the dead of night, three measured knocks sound at the door.

It's waiting for you to open it.

The lowest trade in Jiuzhao, lower even than cleaning out privies. Dogs passing by your feet look back at you twice.

Su Wan spent ten years surviving the apocalypse, then set herself on fire. She opened her eyes in this place and applied for the job on her third day.

The reasons were practical: good pay, little work, daily wages, and meals included.

On her first day, she stood before a corpse that had been lying still for ten hours and heard it say three words.

"Don't open the door."

The System gave her a job like this:

[Main Quest: Send off all the ringing in this world.]

Su Wan stared at the words for a long time, then gave a serious reply:

"Why not send me off first?"

Why the dead in this world refused to lie still, what the city's clocks were measuring every day, and what the previous owner of her body had been investigating: all that could wait.

The most pressing matters now were tomorrow's rent and the ringing tax due the day after.

No matter how great your skills, they couldn't beat a bowl of hot porridge.
