If you arranged everything by the year it happened, Wen Xu's story would seem easy to understand.
He met Zhou Yanting at twenty-three. They fell in love and moved in together. At thirty, they decided to try an open relationship. That same year, he met Ji Nansheng, followed by another romance, another home, several moves, and two separations, one after the other.
But told this way, Zhou Yanting seems to do nothing but wait, Ji Nansheng seems to be someone who simply came along later, and Wen Xu seems like a man who always had the power to choose and ultimately returned to where he started.
None of them was that person.
Zhou Yanting had his own doubts and convictions. He had agreed to things he might not always be able to bear. He had considered leaving, and he didn't stay every time just to give in. Ji Nansheng wasn't a mere interlude in someone else's story. He had ideals, pride, a life of his own, and things he could not give up for love. As for Wen Xu, he had loved sincerely and considered the feelings of the people he loved. He had always treasured the feelings they had genuinely shared.
They fell in love at different times, but that did not make one love story a footnote to another.
If he really had to write down what happened, Wen Xu probably knew how to make everyone seem justified. Add a moment of hesitation, remove a bitter remark, make the silence before a breakup last a little longer, and even leaving could be given a dignified reason.
But he had no right to decide what Zhou Yanting should forgive, nor could he speak for Ji Nansheng about things he had never heard. As for himself, many of the reasons he had once believed beyond doubt were ones he no longer fully believed, even when he wrote them down now.
They all knew what had happened. Each choice had made sense at the time, and the things they lost afterward were ultimately the price each of them had to bear.
Some love remains real even after people part, and some reunions cannot make the past whole.
Theme: Using complex intimate relationships as a lens, this story explores freedom, fidelity, responsibility, and self-identity in love. People can redefine the form their relationships take, but no choice frees them from emotional and ethical responsibility. Mature love does not erase differences. It means recognizing another person's independence while learning to understand and respect them, and to bear the consequences of one's choices.
