Fan Che had spent three years farming at home when he heard that his fiance of four years was on the verge of dying. So he loaded a shoulder pole with bags and bundles and headed for the city.
Before he left, his parents gave him plenty of reminders: Mr. Rong is in poor health. Take him plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables from home to help him build up his strength.
Fan Che patted the bundle slung over his chest. "It's all in here. As long as he can eat it, I promise I'll feed it to him."
He walked into the Rong family's grand mansion. The person who opened the door was an extraordinarily tall young man.
Fan Che tilted his head back to see his face, but the other man pulled him straight into his arms, with quite a bit of force.
The man said, "You're finally here."
It sounded like Rong Yin.
-
Rong Yin seemed to be in decent health, but he tended to lose his energy at night and needed Fan Che to stay with him.
Every night, Fan Che slept beside Rong Yin, always leaving a towel on the bedside table so he could wipe him down in the middle of the night.
After all, Rong Yin often tossed and turned late into the night, burning up all over.
A week later, Fan Che's parents called and asked him, "Have you given Mr. Rong all the fruit and vegetables from home? Does he like them?"
Fan Che answered confidently, "He ate them. He likes them."
His parents asked again, "Which one does he like best? We can send him more."
Fan Che: "I guess what he likes best is my mouth?"
The next day, Fan Che's parents rushed to the big city, eager to get an explanation from Rong Yin.
Besides having Fan Che look after Rong Yin, the reason they'd sent him to the city was to call off the engagement with the Rong family.
Rong Yin was in such poor health. They shouldn't let him hold Fan Che back, should they?
It had only been a week, and Rong Yin was already doing all sorts of things to Fan Che. How could that be okay?
After hearing their concerns, Rong Yin handed them a document from the table and said nonchalantly,
"These are my medical examination results and a marriage application. If you're worried, Fan Che and I can register our marriage tomorrow."
Fan Che's parents hastily waved their hands. "That's not what we meant. We're in no hurry, either."
Rong Yin stared at them expressionlessly. "I am."
-
Fan Che went through the wedding ceremony in a complete daze.
He kept thinking about the fruit trees at home that were about to ripen, and wanted to take time off to go back to the countryside every few days.
Rong Yin had no choice but to buy a new estate. There wasn't a blade of grass on it, keeping Fan Che busy from dawn till dusk every day.
After eight in the evening, Rong Yin would scoop Fan Che up and carry him back, his face cold.
Apparently, once a night wasn't enough to tire Fan Che out. Maybe he should make it three times a night instead.
The next day, Fan Che woke up two hours late. Looking rather glum, he rode with the driver to the estate and worked in the fields until ten at night.
Rong Yin kept him company until ten, then forcibly carried him away. Fan Che soon slipped off again.
Only when Rong Yin sneezed twice in the estate's rapidly dropping temperature did Fan Che panic. He hurriedly pulled him back to the car, then carefully brewed him ginger soup at the mansion.
Rong Yin held Fan Che's hand, his eyes soft and vulnerable. "Wife, I need you to take care of me more than those fruit trees at the estate do."
Fan Che blushed.
Why were Rong Yin's sweet nothings so corny? Even the young heartthrobs in Fan Che's village didn't say things like that anymore.
