The seventeenth year of the Republic of China, late spring in Jiangnan.
Shen Zhiyu, a Han woman raised to follow old proprieties, is trapped within the narrow bounds of a courtyard, dressed in a blue gown. Su Nianqing, a young lady who studied abroad and has just returned, brings with her the spirit of a new age as she strides into the rain-soaked alley.
One is steeped in the proprieties of the old world; the other carries the ideals of a new age. Their chance meeting in a rainy alley entwines two lives on entirely different paths.
The old courtyard walls cannot stop their hearts from stirring, and the gossip of society cannot keep them from standing side by side. They meet in the cracks between eras and save each other through the storms, cherishing a tenderness known to no one else. The blue gown will not betray her, nor will the new age.
Theme: Breaking the shackles of the times, two women choosing each other and finding salvation in one another.
