1.
Just before the last torrential downpour of late autumn hit Qizhou, Zhang Youxiao was pinned to the ground and beaten by Fu Jianian, every punch landing hard.
When the rain grew heavier, they climbed back into the car.
Clutching a wet wipe, Zhang Youxiao lowered his head and cleaned the dirt off Fu Jianian's white trousers.
A tall figure stood outside the car window, there to pick Fu Jianian up.
Zhang Youxiao looked even more sour than he had while being beaten. "You actually called him to pick you up at a time like this?"
Fu Jianian looked at him coldly. Zhang Youxiao ground his back teeth, then could only unlock the car door.
Because the person standing outside
was Fu Jianian's fiance.
2.
In his first month in Qizhou, Zhang Youxiao heard all about Fu Jianian, the next heir to the Fu family, a pillar of Qizhou's business world, and her flawless reputation.
Elegant and considerate, gentle and generous, she was the model heir, the unattainable ideal admired by everyone in their circle.
Yet Zhang Youxiao was not only beaten in private, but also had two glasses of red wine thrown in his face by Fu Jianian in public.
Fu Jianian said she and her fiance were in love by choice.
In love by choice?
What a load of crap.
Did she spend even a third as much time with her fiance as she spent with him?
A raging fire burned in Zhang Youxiao's heart, though he had no idea what had set it alight.
But why the hell wouldn't Fu Jianian just say she was in love with him?
3.
When Zhang Youxiao saw Fu Jianian standing outside his office building with his scarf around her neck, he almost felt as if he had returned to Qizhou from California.
Like a lover separated by distance in the middle of their honeymoon phase, she had suddenly appeared at sunset in California, at five o'clock.
The red light flashed. With ten seconds left, Zhang Youxiao leaned over and kissed her.
Whether Miss Fu was happy or upset, kissing her was always the best choice.
The competitive Miss Fu usually liked to challenge him in secret while they kissed, but today she was so quiet and docile, only responding slowly and steadily.
As the light turned green, Fu Jianian looked into his eyes, her warm, damp lips still close to his.
She said, "Let's chase the sunset."
Zhang Youxiao thought she might have found out something.
So Miss Fu's knightly instincts kicked in, and she felt sorry for him.
This time, they raced down California's Highway One not to stay alive,
but to chase the last glow in his lover's eyes.
