Everyone said that the regent, Qi Jingyuan, was as cold as frost and held the power of life and death. Even the emperor had to defer to him.

Only Su Tang knew what he was like, standing outside the snowy lodge late at night.

She knew how many people he had dealt with on her behalf, though he never said a word about it.

Everyone said the young emperor was unruly and temperamental, a young ruler no one should dare provoke.

Only Su Tang knew that after a nightmare, he would clutch her sleeve and cry.

She knew how his voice trembled like a leaf in the wind when he said, "Ah Tang, don't go."

One was a powerful minister who dominated the court. The other was the young emperor she had raised herself.

One sheltered her from the storm in the court; the other, deep in the palace, made her his entire world.

But Su Tang knew in her heart

that in this world, the only person she could rely on was herself.

Sincere feelings could change in an instant.

Step by step, she plotted her way up, from maidservant to palace official, from the inner court to the imperial court, carving out a path through a world of men.

She thought she could leave love behind and emerge unscathed, but she never expected

Qi Jingyuan to ask her, eyes red, "Su Tang, do you have a heart at all?"

Xie Jingheng to kneel before her and say, "Ah Tang, I'll give up being emperor. Please don't go, all right?"

On the chessboard of power, the worst mistake is to fall in love.

What should she do?
