Synopsis
Ling Xingchu, the venerable immortal of Shangqing, has overseen the laws of the Three Realms for thousands of years. He strictly upholds the heavenly laws, his heart as cold as jade. The Mysterious Rule Sword in his hand judges only good and evil, merit and fault; he has never once wavered at the suffering of the world. In his eyes, the law is the bottom line. No matter how helpless someone may have been, anyone who commits a crime must be punished, without the slightest leniency.
A thousand years ago, a catastrophe swept across the Three Realms. Countless souls vanished, leaving behind resentful spirits to wander the world and sow chaos. Ling Xingchu was ordered down the mountain to purge the rampaging demon spirits and maintain the order of heaven and earth.
Across the four seas, there is a wandering cultivator named Wen Changyan. With no sect to rely on, he has spent years drifting through the Three Realms, carrying a bamboo flute and guiding lonely spirits trapped by their obsessions to the afterlife. He has seen the struggles of countless lives and understands that many who descend into darkness are not evil by nature. They have simply run out of options, driven to desperation by fate. People say he is softhearted, showing compassion and indulging others without restraint. But Wen Changyan has always believed that good and evil are never as simple as black and white, and that the world's suffering should not be judged by cold statutes alone.
While ridding the mountain of evil, Ling Xingchu encounters Wen Changyan in a valley occupied by resentful spirits. From their very first clash, their beliefs are at odds. Ling Xingchu wants to destroy every rampaging spirit to prevent future calamities; Wen Changyan insists on uncovering the source of their obsessions and trying to dispel their resentment rather than simply erasing them. One stands firm in the laws of heaven and will not yield an inch; the other empathizes with the hardships of the mortal world and is full of compassion. Yet when one spirit disturbance after another breaks out, the two, despite their opposition, have no choice but to travel together.
Along the way, they see ordinary people driven by the world into becoming vengeful ghosts, and cultivators abandoned by their sects and forced into demonic paths. Little by little, they catch glimpses of the truth concealed behind the catastrophe of a thousand years ago. Ling Xingchu gradually understands that although the heavenly laws must be upheld, beyond their cold rules lie the joys and sorrows of all living things. Wen Changyan, too, learns that compassion needs boundaries; yielding without end will only bring about even greater disaster.
The two who once stood opposed slowly set aside their prejudices, coming to understand and save each other. As a conspiracy sealed away for a thousand years gradually comes to light, the Three Realms once again face upheaval. Standing side by side, Ling Xingchu and Wen Changyan find a path of balance between the strict laws of heaven and the warmth of the mortal world. When the dust finally settles, stars fall at dawn, and the long night at last gives way to peace.
Theme: The law must be upheld, but the suffering of all living things must not be ignored. Compassion must have limits; it must not allow wrongdoing to run rampant
