Gathering Hibiscus by the River

Princess Liu Chan of Shouyi has come of age to choose a husband, and officials at court are eagerly vying for the opportunity.

The princess is beautiful and kind-hearted. On top of that, her elder brother, the new emperor, dotes on her, making her a most desirable wife.

Who could have expected that King Liu Zhi of Liang would suddenly appear at court, offer himself as a candidate, and declare that he would give the entire kingdom of Liang to the princess?

King Liang has long been renowned for his beauty and virtue. Refined as an orchid and graceful as a gentleman, he leaves no one daring to compete with him.

Yet the princess says no, shocking both court and country.

Everyone assumes the princess dislikes King Liang and secretly rejoices.

No one knows that when he was sixteen, the slender, fair hostage Liu Zhi, as beautiful as a girl, once secretly kissed Liu Chan, the emperor's most beloved Fifth Princess, beside the palace's Moon Pool.

Their fingers entwined, the two made a heartfelt promise to stay together for the rest of their lives.
