Wen Yanqiu paid Cheng Zhaoye to kill her.
Cheng Zhaoye took the money, but never got around to doing it.
She broke into Wen Yanqiu's home, rummaged through her drawers, tracked her movements, and sat by her bed in the middle of the night, as cool and detached as if she were waiting for the perfect moment.
Wen Yanqiu let her watch, and let her come closer.
"Are you going to kill me tonight?"
"No."
"Then what are you here for?"
Cheng Zhaoye's gaze fell on her slightly open collar. "Inspecting the target."
Before long, the inspection began to cross the line.
Cheng Zhaoye picked her up after work, ate the meals she cooked, and let her sleep in her bed. But when Wen Yanqiu leaned in to kiss her, she turned her face away and reminded her, "This is just a transaction."
Wen Yanqiu gripped her chin and made her look at her again.
"Then why is your heart beating so fast?"
Cheng Zhaoye refused to admit she was in love, and refused to let her go.
Until Wen Yanqiu found the contract in the drawer, still in force.
"Are you still going to kill me?"
"Yes."
"When?"
Cheng Zhaoye pinned her against the edge of the desk, her fingertip brushing Wen Yanqiu's lips. Her voice remained calm.
"When I can bring myself to."
Wen Yanqiu smiled and tipped her head up to kiss her.
"Then you'd better hurry."
"Because I don't want to die anymore."
She was looking forward to a deliberate murder.
But the killer she hired never wanted her life.
