An obscure young player from Venice became familiar to Italians after 1996, rose to worldwide fame after 2000, and by 2002, the whole world knew his name!
Vinicio Delgado had many nicknames throughout his life. Here are a few he listed himself, in no particular order.
“Vinie” is the best known. It stands for love and happiness, and everyone calls him that. Delgado's mother once said, “I first called him ‘Vinie’ because I hoped he could feel the love around him.”
His glorious title, “The Alchemist,” came from the promising young talents Vinie repeatedly found for AC Milan, who went on to shine. After retiring, he became a scout, personally bringing top youth prospects to Milan.
“Vice Del” is the affectionate nickname Chinese fans gave Vinie. His full title is Vice Chairman Delgado. That's right, he became AC Milan's vice chairman in 2006, a feat perhaps never achieved before or since in Milan's history.
Besides football, he had two major goals in life: to experience a passionate romance and to drink to his heart's content. He fulfilled the latter as soon as he retired. Asked about the former, Del made no attempt to hide it: “Actually, I've already achieved that goal for over ten years. You all know my beloved: Paolo Maldini.”
