Jin Qu died.
She got on the wrong side of five burly men while handling a lawsuit, and they tortured her for three days. On the third night, she broke free, killed all five with her own hands, and fell into a pool of blood. Her soul left her body, and a reaper took her to the underworld.
There, she saw the five men's souls in line, waiting to be judged and sent to the eighteenth level of hell.
Jin Qu thought hell was too good for them. She closed her eyes, then opened them, and all five men were in her stomach.
All five. Not one left behind.
The reaper rushed over, his face drained of color. "You... you ate them?"
Jin Qu paused. "Yeah. They owed me."
After reporting to the King of Hell, the reaper flipped through the Book of Life and Death. "The underworld is overflowing. There are too many vicious ghosts, and we can't handle them all. You can take care of them for us."
Jin Qu asked, "What's in it for me?"
The reaper said, "We'll send you back to the living world, where you can live like a normal person. You'll also be able to travel freely between the worlds of the living and the dead. Eating ghosts will extend your lifespan. We'll grant you whatever you want."
Jin Qu thought for three seconds. "Deal."
If she could return, she'd keep working as a lawyer and specialize in death penalty cases. She'd take the cases no one else dared to touch and win the ones no one else could. Wouldn't that mean she'd have plenty to eat?
After that, she won every case she took. The more she ate, the stronger she became, and the grayer her pupils grew.
People called her Gray Eyes.
Until one day, the ghost of a victim knelt before her. "Please don't eat me. I can help you."
Jin Qu wondered: should she eat it, or not?
