What Remains After the Rainy Season

Male and female leads. School story + one-sided crush. Sweet first, then angsty.

As children, Yu Jing and Lu Jingmian often played together until dark. Neither wanted to leave, and they'd only go home when their parents came to get them.

Lu Jingmian once swore to Yu Jing that he would love only her for his whole life. If he broke his promise, may lightning strike him dead.

Yu Jing only covered her mouth and smiled. She said nothing.

Later, Lu Jingmian moved to a new home and made better friends. Six years passed, and he'd clearly forgotten Yu Jing. When he saw her again, he didn't recognize her.

Yu Jing often dreamed about the happy times she spent playing with a little boy, but she'd forgotten his name and face. She wanted to get closer and see what he looked like, but every time she did, he became blurrier, or turned into a butterfly and flew away.

Yu Jing once wrote in her journal: You were like a beam of light, shining into my life. My life had light in it, but one day I woke up and found myself in a dark place. All I could see was a patch of light far away. It was a group of glowing butterflies. Whenever I got close to them, they flew away, deeper into the darkness. And then, they disappeared without a sound.

Yu Jing went to elementary school in Kongtan, where she was happy and met someone she liked. But the fact that she had a crush on him came out. One day, the boy she liked found her and told her he didn't like her. After that, Yu Jing stopped liking him, and things returned to normal.

Yu Jing met Lu Jingmian in middle school. Was Lu Jingmian also attending middle school in Kongtan?

After moving to his new home, Lu Jingmian met someone he got along with really well. Later, his parents moved him back to Kongtan so they could set up a street stall there. He transferred to a middle school in Kongtan, too. One rainy night, he encountered Yu Jing again after all those years, and she felt both familiar and strange to him.

Yu Jing and Lu Jingmian went through a lot together during their three years of middle school. They laughed and cried together.

But in high school, Lu Jingmian became deskmates with a cheerful, outgoing girl, as if she were his one true love.

"Lu Jingmian, why are you always hanging out with Song Huaian?"

"None of your business. Get lost."

Later on,

Lu Jingmian and Song Huaian got together, and Yu Jing became depressed.

On the night of Lu Jingmian's wedding, Yu Jing jumped into a river.

The next morning,

a news story broke: Last night, a girl jumped from a bridge into the river.

Sadly, Lu Jingmian had already deleted all of Yu Jing's contact information and never watched the news, so he would never see her again.

"Lu Jingmian, didn't you promise to love me forever?"

"Lu Jingmian, the river is so cold."

"You said you'd take me to see the ocean. Go with Song Huai'an instead."

"Goodbye, Lu Jingmian."

Yu Jing's mouth and stomach filled with icy river water. Every breath was a struggle. Her body grew colder and colder, and her consciousness gradually faded. Her eyes were full of water, though she couldn't tell if it was river water or tears.

Fireworks filled the sky over Chengdu, soaring upward and blossoming. Then, all along the streets, people cried out:

"Happy wedding!"

After the rainy season, Jing, still sleepless. Jing, sleeping.
