[Short Story, Complete]
In 1977, Chen Sui was seventeen.
Her father planned to sell her to the foolish son of Old Xu next door as his wife.
The bride price was twenty yuan in total.
Chen Sui said she didn't want to marry. She wanted to continue her studies.
Her father pointed at her nose and cursed, "The only use for a money-losing girl is to sell her for cash!"
Her younger brother started calculating. "Sis, that works out perfectly. You can leave your dowry to me so I can use it to marry a wife!"
Just then, their mother, who had been mentally impaired for half her life, suddenly sat up in bed.
She looked at the earthen walls, then felt the bed boards, and murmured in confusion, "Where am I? Didn't I die? How did things get so shabby?"
The whole family stared blankly at their mother, who had suddenly come to her senses.
She pondered with a strange expression for a long while, then suddenly realized, "Did I transmigrate?"
