But the opportunity was nothing like her mother had imagined.

She was shunned, had no friends, and wandered the school alone.

It was the boy in his school uniform, leaning against the hallway railing and waving to her.

It was her birthday, when she sat gingerly on a carousel horse while he smiled gently up at her from below.

It was after each of her breakdowns, when he held her in his arms and said firmly, "You still have me."

When she was seventeen, they got together.

Wang Xiran bounced along ahead, then turned around, her white skirt twirling through the air. For the first time, she smiled so happily. "Pei Xubai! Hurry up!"

But when she turned around again, the boy who had said, "You still have me," was gone.

Her smile slowly faded.

"Liar. You promised we'd be together forever."

"So why did we end at seventeen?"

In her hospital bed, Wang Xiran, diagnosed with cancer, curled up and gazed toward the door, waiting.

Waiting for the boy to reappear in her world.
