A black-bellied, dark-to-light tyrant gong x an innocent, cheerful little fox spirit shou
The playful little fox spirit Lan Qi ran down the mountain and wandered into the imperial hunting grounds, where an arrow struck him. Fortunately, the thirteen-year-old crown prince rescued him.
Once his injuries healed, he slipped back into the remote mountains. At a tea house along the road, he unexpectedly heard that the Imperial Preceptor had declared the little crown prince to be born under the ill-starred fate of a lone star, destined to become a brutal tyrant. The emperor had come to despise him and banished him to the Cold Palace, where he was left to fend for himself.
Lan Qi was furious.
The little crown prince who had saved him was so kind. How could he possibly become a tyrant?
Lan Qi slung a little bundle over his huge tail and snuck into the imperial palace.
My little benefactor, Foxy is here to save you!

The little crown prince was suddenly deposed. His honor as heir apparent vanished like smoke, and he was confined to a dark, sunless bedchamber. With the tree fallen, the monkeys scattered; the eunuchs and palace maids all avoided the place.
But strange things began happening in the bedchamber.
A fresh, enormous chicken leg appeared among the cold leftovers brought to the table. Two tiny, pointed bite marks had been left on the juiciest part.
A string of glistening purple grapes appeared on the open book on his desk, shining with moisture as if someone had been so tempted they couldn't help drooling on them. A few drops had even blurred the words on the page.
The torn cuff of his robe had been clumsily mended, so hideously that it was hard to look at.
A secret guard sent by his maternal family came to visit.
The thirteen-year-old boy sat straight-backed, composed himself, thought for a couple of seconds, then said in an unhurried voice, "I am doing perfectly well here. Please tell my uncle not to worry too much. The only thing is, the nights are rather bitterly cold."
That night, when the little crown prince went to sleep, a fluffy little fox crawled under his covers.
It curled obediently and warmly in his arms. Its snowy-white tail was soft and bushy, and it carried a clean, fresh scent.
In the darkness, the little crown prince's lips curled into a smile.
Got you.

The struggle at court grew fiercer by the day. As the princes fought for the throne, the schemes of their families even reached the deposed crown prince.
The little white fox leaped up and took a hidden arrow meant for the crown prince.
The crown prince held him in trembling arms. For the first time, panic appeared in his usually unruffled eyes.
Lan Qi whimpered in pain, wanting to comfort him.
It's all right. You saved me from an arrow back then, and now Foxy gets to save you from one. That's only fair.
But before he could say a word, he fell into darkness.

When Lan Qi opened his eyes again, he found himself transmigrated ten years into the future and captured among the beauties from the Western Regions being presented to the tyrant on the throne.
...A tyrant?
Lan Qi asked around, then turned pale with shock.
Where had the gentle, kind little crown prince from back then gone? How had he still ended up becoming a tyrant?!
