Nova Kingsley, an apprentice witch.

And to qualify as a grand witch, she must fulfill one requirement: raise an adopted son from the time he is born until he is laid to rest.

As an immortal witch, Nova rarely interacts with humans. Looking into those eyes, black as raven feathers, she willingly steps into the trap woven from a spider's web and extends an invitation.

Then she discovers that this world is far more interesting than she imagined. Everyone she meets makes her want to take them in as her adopted son before she misses her chance.
