After My Fiancé Fell for Someone Else, I Married His Older Brother

Dou Huaizhu is a farmer’s daughter. Fortunately, she has a promising fiancé who passed the provincial examinations, and everyone says that once he heads to the capital to sit the imperial examinations, Dou Huaizhu will enjoy a life of luxury. After her fiancé leaves to take the exams, Dou Huaizhu encounters a badly wounded, unconscious man on her way home. Mistaking him for her fiancé, she brings him home. Only after washing his face does she realize her mistake. Since he looks somewhat like her fiancé, Dou Huaizhu takes pity on him and lets him stay while he recovers. * Lou Zhao is the heir to the Duke of Wei’s household. Born into a distinguished family, he is upright and noble. As an Assistant Minister of the Court of Judicial Review, he is sent to investigate a case, only to be ambushed by criminals, wounded, and brought home by a country girl. The girl is crude and vulgar, with none of the modesty expected of a young woman. She uses her pretty face to flirt with him, and most laughable of all, claims he looks like her fiancé. Lou Zhao despises people who resort to such shameless tactics. Still, since she saved him, he decides to reward her with some money and leave it at that. Later, he tests the waters by suggesting she return with him. To his surprise, she agrees after only a moment’s hesitation, making him look down on her even more. He thinks that if she knows her place, he might even reveal his identity and reward her by making her a concubine. * When they reach the capital, Lou Zhao learns that she wasn’t lying: he really does look like her fiancé. And her fiancé turns out to be his younger brother, who went missing in childhood. His younger brother is welcomed back into the family, and the country girl he had sneered at is suddenly his future sister-in-law. Lou Zhao laughs scornfully on the outside, but inside he’s consumed by conflicting feelings. He can’t remember when he started unconsciously following the woman with his eyes. One day, she stands in the rain, watching her fiancé laugh and chat with another woman. Lou Zhao goes over to hold an umbrella above her and tucks her rain-soaked hair behind her ear. Looking at her intently, he says, “Forget him. Take a look at me.” Theme: Keep your heart turned toward the sun, and shine like the morning sun
