Ji Songxue wants to run away from her wedding.
Her escape fails, but she encounters something supernatural. She and the young lord are swallowed by a cat demon and trapped inside a wedding procession painting.
When she wakes up, she discovers she’s become the groom. The young lord who came to investigate the case is brought before her, face hidden behind a fan, supported by attendants, and made to be her bride.
“What are you staring at?”
“Staring at you... You’re beautiful.”
The young lord blushes at that. “Once we get out, don’t you dare tell anyone, or you’ll regret it!”
Before they can enjoy a moment of peace, a sharp cry rings out overhead. They both look up: Kongming lanterns rise slowly from the ground into the night sky, and fireworks suddenly burst open beside them, filling the air with brilliant, roaring explosions.
Ji Songxue rests her elbows on her knees and cups her face in her hands, gazing at the fireworks rising into the sky. “So the young lord likes a lively scene.”
Two lanterns cast a warm glow between them. Li Huaiyi looks at her profile, its gentle light illuminating her calm, wistful face. “Not exactly. It’s always been quiet around me, ever since I was a child, so sometimes I want to experience a little of the bustling human world.”
Ji Songxue turns to him, puzzled. “Isn’t a quiet life a good thing? Don’t you cultivators like peace and nature best? The bustle of the human world is certainly charming, but if you look at it for too long, aren’t you afraid it’ll disturb your Dao heart?”
Li Huaiyi shakes his head. “I’m not afraid.”
His Dao heart is already in disarray. The person who disturbed it is right in front of him, completely unaware.
