Flirting After Marriage

To repay the Yan family for raising her, Yan Du agreed to marry into another family in place of their biological daughter.

The Tan family was one of the capital's top elite families. Their only son, Tan Yunsheng, had taken over the family business at a young age and become the new head of the family.

Rumor had it that Tan Yunsheng had no interest in women and was aloof and dignified. He had angered his grandfather so badly by repeatedly refusing to marry that the old man pretended to be ill and checked himself into the hospital.

At their first meeting, he pushed a contract as thick as a book toward Yan Du. His manner was completely distant, and his voice cool. “I need a wife in name. After we register our marriage, we'll live together and act like a married couple in public. We don't need to make a show of it. We'll treat each other with mutual respect.”

At their second meeting, at the Civil Affairs Bureau, neither of them showed the slightest joy at their upcoming marriage. The staff member read aloud from the information booklet, speaking loudly the entire time. By the third reading, Tan Yunsheng gave them a cold look, and the only obstacle to their getting a marriage license, which had not really been an obstacle at all, regretfully left.

Their married life was calm and uneventful, at least in Yan Du's eyes. She had a clear goal: divorce after a year. But married life turned out to be a little different from what she had imagined.

Then one day, after a coworker she had just turned down drove her home, he gently drew Yan Du into his arms right in front of Tan Yunsheng.

When they got home, Tan Yunsheng's eyes, supposedly calm and collected, had long since lost their composure. His reason shattered completely as he seized her wrist and asked, each word deliberate, “Are you planning to wait until our one-year term is up and then go to him?”

On their first New Year's together, Yan Du stood by the floor-to-ceiling window as grand fireworks bloomed before her. Tan Yunsheng came over, slid his hand along her waist, and drew her into his arms. Bowing his head, he whispered in her ear, “Yan Du, let me give you a home.”

As she stood there stunned, Tan Yunsheng's voice softened with affection. “And you're the unexpected surprise of my life.”
