Synopsis
A century into the Great Zhao dynasty, powerful clans monopolize the government, merchants are treated like ants, and the hierarchy between high and low is as rigid as iron.
Prince Jing's household descends directly from the dynasty's founding emperor. Rumors surrounding an imperial decree have made it a constant target of suspicion from the imperial clan and the great families. One heir after another has been murdered. To save the entire household and preserve its century-old legacy, the newborn legitimate daughter, Su Qingyan, is forcibly stripped of her identity as a girl. Disguised as a boy, she deceives the world and becomes the publicly acknowledged sole heir to Prince Jing's household.
From then on, she binds up her hair beneath a crown and hides her gentle nature, navigating the court under the name of the young heir.
In public, she is gentle and restrained, a peerless strategist, a heavenly-born noble whom every faction seeks to win over and fears in equal measure.
In private, she keeps her secret alone, walking a path of torment at every turn, guarding a crime punishable by the extermination of her entire clan if exposed.
She once thought her life would be shackled to the palace's power games, with no one who understood her and no one to rely on, until Lin Wanting, the legitimate daughter of a Jiangnan merchant family, arrived in the capital.
The Lin family is wealthy enough to rival a nation, yet has been considered base for generations, prey to anyone who wishes to exploit them.
To overturn this oppression, protect her family, and win merchants across the realm a chance to survive, the brilliant and proud Lin Wanting enters the game herself, wielding wealth as a blade and intelligence as armor as she ventures alone into the capital's treacherous court.
One dares not live as a woman; the other is deemed unfit to enter the court.
Though worlds apart and bound for different paths by convention, in their darkest hour they become each other's only salvation.
Su Qingyan wields power at court, breaking through the barriers between scholars and merchants for her sake and protecting the peace of countless households.
Lin Wanting commands the wealth of the realm, strengthening Prince Jing's household for her sake and helping her move the pieces of the empire.
In public, they form an alliance of convenience, proceeding with caution at every step as the world condemns them.
In private, they entrust each other with life and death, share their secrets, and love each other deeply.
The great families lay traps, the Empress Dowager stages a coup, princes vie for the throne, and the court closes in on them. Storm clouds gather over the city, and the whole world turns against them.
At last, one day,
she casts off the shackles of a decade and more spent in men's clothing, daring to stand before the world in her true form.
She breaks merchants free from a century of humiliation and earns a place in history through her achievements.
Two stars shine as one, power and wealth united.
They break the prison of gender, the chains of class, and the rules of the old dynasty, ushering in a new chapter of prosperity.
Theme: Through the struggles and bond between the two women, Su Qingyan and Lin Wanting, this story challenges the gender constraints and class prejudice of a feudal era, celebrating women's strength in equality, independence, and mutual support. It condemns the corruption of hereditary privilege and seeks a fair, inclusive order for the nation, conveying the uplifting message that individuals can break free of society's shackles and use their own small light to move their times toward a better future.
