During summer break, Yu Qingxue and her roommates rented a car to drive around Qiannan. They set off with the idea of eating, drinking, walking, and sightseeing, and soon arrived at their first stop in Qiannan: Qingyun Miao Village.
The village wasn't very commercialized, and there weren't many tourists. Most visitors came in tour groups with a guide.
At the entrance to the village, Yu Qingxue and her friends caught a few words from a tour guide.
"There are lots of rules in this village. Be careful, or you might get yourselves into trouble."
The four of them exchanged glances, each seeing the same caution in the others' eyes.
After entering the village, they stuck together because of the guide's warning, afraid they might accidentally break a rule and get stuck there.
The first day passed without incident, and they started to relax. They thought the guide had been fearmongering to scare them into sticking together and pressure them into buying handicrafts so middlemen could make a profit.
On the second day, the four of them split up, and everything was still fine. But while sorting through her photos, Yu Qingxue noticed a Miao woman wearing silver jewelry and traditional Miao clothing in one of her shots.
At the bonfire party, Yu Qingxue met the woman who'd accidentally appeared in her photo. She had a beautiful smile, like a cool breeze blowing through a sweltering summer day. Yu Qingxue couldn't look away.
But she was clumsy, and when she was dragged into dancing, she stepped on the woman's feet several times.
Yu Qingxue held out her own foot and let the woman step on it in return.
The woman stepped on her foot, then called her "A-jie."
Later, Yu Qingxue learned that stepping on someone's shoes in this village was a way of proposing, and she'd let the woman do it several times. She also learned that "A-jie" meant "wife" in the village.
The tour guide hadn't been exaggerating. If you broke the local rules, you had to stay, and you'd never be able to leave again.

Suya liked walking around Qingyun Miao Village at the foot of the mountain and practicing her Mandarin by talking to people from outside.
She'd assumed this time would be like the others: once this group of visitors left, another would come along.
At the entrance to the village, she saw a visitor from out of town with a beautiful smile.
At the bonfire party, Suya arranged for the visitor to step on her feet several times, then took the chance to call her A-jie.
Once she'd claimed her, she placed a love bug on her. No matter how far away the visitor went, she'd eventually return to the village.
