Zhu Yao, 23, a college dropout from the biology department, inherits a run-down building from his estranged father: the "Lin City Abnormal Species Shelter." He thinks it's an animal shelter for strays. Then he opens the door and sees a humanoid creature covered in black scales, staring at him with vertical pupils from inside a cage.
The first page of his father's "Shelter Operations Manual" reads: "Every abnormal species must be registered by name, species, and danger level. Administer one dose of 'soothing liquid' each month, or it will go berserk."
The second page reads: "Shelter Specimen No. 1, codename 'Shen': Danger level: Extremely high. Do not look directly at it, touch it, or speak to it."
Zhu Yao closes the manual and looks up at the one in the cage.
"What's your name?"
The other stays silent for three seconds. "...Shen."
Zhu Yao turns around and writes in the registry: Shelter Specimen No. 1. Name: Shen. Species: Unknown. Danger level: Whatever you say it is.
Zhu Yao is an ordinary human, temporarily dragged in by his father to fill a vacancy. Shen is an unidentified creature that crawled out of the "abyss" and has been sealed in the shelter's basement for seven years. The other specimens are all kinds of "things that shouldn't exist": a singing shadow, a woman who only appears on rainy days, half a face living in a mirror...
Zhu Yao's daily routine consists of feeding them, keeping records, and stopping them from fighting. After Shen gets out of his cage, he goes crazy for some reason and sticks to Zhu Yao without ever leaving his side. If another specimen so much as touches a hair on Zhu Yao's head, Shen can slam it into a wall.
One day, Zhu Yao finally loses patience. "Why are you following me, anyway?"
Shen looks down at him. "Because you're the first person to ask my name."
Zhu Yao falls silent for a moment. "All right, then. You handle keeping the peace, and I'll handle the paperwork."
Shen nods.

Theme: Even beings labeled "abnormal" should be treated as individuals.
