Gu Yanqing, heir to the Yongning Marquis's household, serves as the Gu family's "lamplighter." Under a secret edict from the late emperor, he must keep watch on Xie Yun, the regent who wields power over the entire court. At the same time, he must investigate the old case in which the Xie family was framed and clear their name. At the Mid-Autumn Palace Banquet, Gu Yanqing accidentally discovers Xie Yun's secret: he suffers from night blindness. Gu Yanqing openly explains why he is there. He hasn't come to find leverage, but to "light the way" for Xie Yun. Xie Yun consequently summons him to serve at the Regent's residence. The two go from testing each other to gradually opening their hearts, developing feelings as they join forces to uncover evidence about the old case.
