Redox reaction is a chemical reaction in which electrons are gained and lost or shared electron pairs are shifted. During the reaction, the valence of elements changes up and down. The substance that loses electrons and increases in valence undergoes an oxidation reaction and acts as a reducing agent. The substance that gains electrons and decreases in valence undergoes a reduction reaction as an oxidizing agent. The total number of electrons gained and lost in the reaction is always equal.
