The Green Jade Case

At the Lantern Festival, ornate carriages filled the streets as the sound of phoenix flutes rang out.

That night, when they were young, Xie Lanci saw Shen Zhiyan amid a sea of lanterns. He was a gifted young noble with a brilliant future ahead of him. She was the legitimate daughter of the Grand Tutor's household, raised deep within its inner quarters. One glance was enough to take her breath away, and she secretly gave him her heart. On a sheet of green-jade paper, they wrote their vows of eternal love, believing they could enjoy peace year after year and stay together for a lifetime.

But the court was overturned, and the winds of change rose without warning. Framed in a conspiracy, the entire Xie family was convicted, and the once-renowned house fell overnight. Battered by hardship, Xie Lanci walked through seas of blood and ruined walls. From then on, he buried his tenderness and became a patient, hidden avenger. Shen Zhiyan, meanwhile, was trapped by the power struggles of the great families and had no choice of her own. She watched helplessly as the man she loved fell into the abyss, unable even to reach out a hand.

Several years passed in the blink of an eye. He returned as a powerful official, cold-hearted and stern, carefully maneuvering to stir the court's game of chess. She had shed her girlish innocence, confined by family and propriety, quietly waiting within the walls of her household.

Their old love remained in their very bones, while hatred stood between them. They were on opposite sides of fate: once confidants in their youth, now opponents locked in a battle of wits on the chessboard.

I searched for him a thousand times among the crowd. When I finally turned back, the lanterns were still glowing, but the one I had known was covered in scars and no longer the same as before.

The green-jade paper remained, its vows faded with time. Would they let love and hate be crushed beneath political schemes, or cross the sea of blood and vengeance to find, amid the wreckage, a quiet corner lit by lanterns, and spend the rest of their lives together?
