[Updates may be slow…]
Ruthless, upright female official × scheming aristocratic son pretending to be a wastrel
Wei Dengyu, the last survivor of the Wei family, was famous in the capital for being a relentless overachiever. At work, she competed with her colleagues to solve cases faster; at home, she tried to outdo her younger sister in worldly experience…
As they competed, her colleagues, pressured by the race for promotion, gradually backed off, while her younger sister found her happy ending and married the man of her dreams…
In the end, Wei Dengyu was the only one still trapped in the night her entire family was murdered.
People in the capital often gossiped over tea that Lady Wei and the young master of the Lu family were polar opposites.
The Lu family was full of “upright, hard-working folk,” yet somehow they had raised a carefree young master whose mind was filled with flowers and music. He spent his days frequenting the pleasure houses, seemingly having far too much fun to ever want to leave.
As luck would have it, the two had never met, so people wondered what an amusing sight it would be if they ever crossed paths.
Someone took the question to Lu Zhisi. The well-dressed young man lounged against a low couch and gave a scornful laugh. “So what if we meet? It’s bad enough that she can’t stand to see other people taking it easy. If it were me, I’d make sure she didn’t get her way.”
Later, after a murder case struck the Lu family, Wei Dengyu took it on while investigating her family’s old case. The two met at the Lu residence.
The young master of the Lu family had traded his usual smiling eyes for a cool, hard gaze fixed directly on this uninvited guest. Gone was the relaxed air he wore when joking around. He asked calmly, “Lady Wei, you went to such lengths to get into the Lu residence. What exactly are you after?”
Wei Dengyu lowered her eyes with a smile and sparred with him. “It’s simply my duty.”
After several more rounds of sparring, they finally reached an understanding.
The young master who had once said he would never let Lady Wei have her way repeatedly turned down his companions’ enthusiastic invitations to go out. “The pleasure houses are too vulgar, and wasting one’s days enjoying flowers and music is no example to follow.”
His companions looked at the man who had not only changed his tune, but was now turning the tables and scolding them. They teased him, “Young Master Lu, you’ve certainly changed. We never would have expected this. Have you heard some news again?”
Lu Zhisi adjusted his sleeves and put on a troubled look before turning away. “How did you find out that tomorrow is the day I’m going to ask the Wei family for her hand in marriage?” He sighed. “A Yu said I should visit her at the residence today. If I don’t go now, it’ll be too late, so I’m afraid I can’t join you.”
His companions: “…” (Who was the one who couldn’t keep his mouth shut and asked him that?)
