1. Lannuo is a little illiterate kid from the Shuohua clan. He follows his parents to the capital to find work.
His mother pats the little spore cap on his head and reminds him, “Nuonuo, we have to work hard and learn how to be city people!”
Lannuo nods hard, his chubby little face tilted up. Got it, learn to be human!
He soon finds the very best person to learn from at kindergarten: the class monitor, Huo Jiyun.
Lannuo diligently follows him around and learns. Before long, he can speak Mandarin, use the fancy toilet, play games, and write pinyin. He even gets a little red flower as a reward from the teacher! Three of them!
He proudly sticks the little flowers on his face. His learning partner may be mean, but it turns out following him really is the right choice!
Lannuo is sure he'll soon become a high-class city person!
2. Huo Jiyun is a famously obnoxious young master. Recently, he's noticed a little copycat in his class.
Not only does the kid imitate the way he talks in that soft, limp voice every day, he even copies his signature class-monitor line: “Everybody, stand up!”
When the class lines up for the toilet, the kid follows behind him. At lunch, he sits beside him too, as if he can't do anything without copying Huo Jiyun!
Worst of all, he even copies Huo Jiyun's incredible red-and-green sock combination, making everyone laugh at him.
“Bad copycat!” Huo Jiyun yells angrily, “Wewer!”
It isn't until the teacher explains that Lannuo belongs to an ethnic minority and doesn't understand Chinese that Huo Jiyun realizes that, as class monitor, he has a duty to look after the other children, including this little copycat.
He says awkwardly, “Fine. From now on, this young master will protect you.”
Lannuo tilts his little head and repeats the words, carefully copying him: “From now on, this young master will pwotect you!”
Huo Jiyun gives a smug little snort. He knew his little tagalong couldn't live without him. Lannuo can't even talk properly yet, but Huo Jiyun is sure he'll raise him well!
3.
Later, when the teacher calls the parents in, Lannuo's mom and dad see their baby holding hands with their boss's obnoxious son.
Lannuo's eyes sparkle as he announces excitedly, “Ah-e, this is my wife! I'm a city person now!”
His parents: Huh?
4.
Everyone knows Lannuo has a “wife” who raised him from childhood and treats him like royalty.
Lannuo thinks they've misunderstood. He and Jiyun are just really good friends, that's all.
Huo Jiyun laughs in disbelief. “You think we're friends?”
That night.
“Baby, why did you stop copying me? Didn't you used to love imitating the way I talk?” Huo Jiyun chuckles, his breath hot as he pats the round bottom beneath his hand.
Huo Jiyun holds Lannuo's earlobe in his mouth and coaxes him softly, “You're so naughty, baby. You don't copy me when we kiss? Didn't you used to love imitating me?”
He is close to tears. If he'd known becoming a city person would make his butt hurt, he'd rather have stayed a free little wildling. Boo-hoo-hoo.
