Xu Mingyan got into the Space-Time Administration right after graduating, and, by a stroke of luck, joined the System Department.
He always thought their department was pointless. Transmigration, Systems, being reborn, body-snatching, it was all nonsense. How could any of that happen in broad daylight, under a clear sky? It was ridiculous.
All he did every day was tease cats and dogs, read mindless novels, and chat with his coworkers.
Things first started to go wrong when he discovered that the System from one of those novels had appeared at the school next door!
The senior officials took it extremely seriously and sent Xu Mingyan's direct supervisor along on the mission.
Song Qiyan looked Xu Mingyan in the eye and said, "From now on, you do as I say."
Xu Mingyan saluted. "Yes, sir."
It was Xu Mingyan's first mission, so of course he was inexperienced and not very bright. He immediately revealed his credentials: "I'm with the Space-Time Administration."
The System looked at the green kid and snickered. "You? I might as well be the Jade Emperor."
Xu Mingyan scratched his head. "...You can think of me that way, too."
Solving a case like this made promotion come quickly.
But the next assignment came without warning. A supervisor from another department assigned a new mission, and it landed on Xu Mingyan's shoulders.
When Song Qiyan found out, he summoned Xu Mingyan to his office and gave him an earful.
"I didn't know you had two bosses? Our department is this small, and you're out here two-timing?"
Xu Mingyan was completely bewildered. "I don't understand. What's wrong? When did I ever cheat on you?"
Song Qiyan had seen people lose their families and homes because of the butterfly effect caused by someone being reborn.
So when the Space-Time Administration was established, he applied for the position. He became one of its first employees, dealing with golden fingers granted to people by Systems and disruptions to the space-time continuum caused by people being reborn.
After all, the Space-Time Administration's duty was to maintain the order of space and time.
He never expected to go out on an assignment and come back to find a new employee in the department.
So what if there was a new employee? But that employee seemed to have a problem with him. He talked to everyone else but not him. Even on missions, he kept things strictly professional and never acted close to him, nothing like what everyone else had said.
Every time Song Qiyan saw Xu Mingyan chatting away with everyone else, he found himself thinking: Why not just kiss him until he shuts up?
What! A subordinate? Wasn't that just the wife the organization had assigned him?
(Special scene)
"Song Qiyan! You're an absolute beast! Don't you feel guilty, looking at your wife, who's five years younger than you, in your arms?"
When he got his friend's call, Song Qiyan had just given Xu Mingyan some water and tucked him into bed.
He stroked Xu Mingyan's cheek and said, "I do. I feel for how inexperienced he is in dealing with people, and I cherish the essence of who he is. I hate how cruel this world can be, and I despise this chaotic space-time. I hate that I kept him by my side before he'd met many people. I'm disgusted by how petty I am, but I don't regret it, because I love him."
A few things to know first:
1. Please don't equate the job titles and forms of address in this story with their real-world counterparts.
2. This story has a touch of the supernatural, since it involves Systems. It can't be viewed from an ordinary person's perspective.
Theme: May there be peace in the world at all times.
