When he was ten years old, Rory Ellis used the price of a breakfast to take a picture of a transfer student who fell from the third floor but patted his pants and walked away.
From then on, she gained a deskmate, a bad friend, and a secret that she decided to pretend she didn't know.
Later, he left only eight words and disappeared: "I will be back. Wait for me."
This wait, seven years.
In the summer when he was seventeen years old, the new Superman landed in Metropolis, and the whole city looked up. Among hundreds of thousands of people, she was the only one who recognized the angle from which she tilted her head to listen to the sound.
The night before their reunion, a black car parked downstairs of her house. The Lex Group holds the handle of her mother twenty years ago and wants her to get close to the new Superman and become a pair of eyes on the chessboard.
She agreed. Because instead of letting other people's eyes focus on him, it would be better to switch to hers.
From then on, she was his deskmate during the day, hot cocoa on his windowsill late at night, and every Thursday, his informant at the bottom of the well. Every report she handed over was authentic and impeccable, and every word was hiding him in a safe direction.
Getting close is the mission, and the heartbeat is real.
