Tang Xinzhi was born Tang Zhaodi. Just as her name suggests, she was born in the mountains to a dirt-poor family with a younger brother.
When she was sixteen, her father wanted her to quit school and marry so he could use the bride price to pay for her brother's education. That summer, Tang Zhaodi felt as if the sky had fallen, but there was nothing she could do.
That same summer, a Mr. Zhou came to the village. Her mother said he was a great benefactor who planned to sponsor the poor students in the area.
Her parents borrowed money to buy a fine spread and invited the benefactor to their home. The two of them praised their son to the skies.
Tang Zhaodi poured tea and drinks. The table was too small to fit her, so she had no choice but to wait by the wall.
Mr. Zhou was tall and imposing, and sat cramped at the table, but he wasn't fussy. He accepted even their cheap liquor. He hardly spoke, merely glancing around a few times before seeing everyone present for exactly who they were.
After several rounds of drinks, the moon rose. Tang Zhaodi gazed at it through the iron-barred window like a prison cage. When she turned around, she saw Mr. Zhou quietly studying her.
He sat there in a relaxed manner, yet his air of royal nobility made the shabby house seem to glow.
Mr. Zhou raised his hand and pointed at her. “She'll do.”
That summer, at sixteen, Tang Zhaodi followed Mr. Zhou to Beijing. She got new clothes and was able to continue her education.
Zhou Wenchuan gave her a new name: Tang Xinzhi. “Virtue fragrant in the heart, conduct reaching far.”
From then on, Zhou Wenchuan became the sky above Tang Xinzhi's head.
Whether thunder or rain, all came as grace from heaven.
