Wu Tong had a crush on a boy two grades above her at the school next door.
Whenever she had free time during the holidays, she would ride twenty bus stops, swaying all the way to the other side of the city. She'd spend the whole day at his cousin's bookstore, just for a few more chances to see him.
The last time she saw him in high school was at that same bookstore. Wu Tong had fallen asleep with her head on the table. When she woke up, the shop was empty, except for Lu Cheng, who was minding the store for his older sister and sitting across from her, playing on his phone.
The fading light streamed in through the window, outlining the boy's handsome features. Wu Tong almost thought she was still dreaming.
After parting with him outside the bookstore, Wu Tong headed for the bus stop alone. She'd barely taken a couple of steps when Lu Cheng caught her by the backpack and pulled her back.
"The bus stop is this way."
Wu Tong froze. "I've always gone this way."
"Your way takes several minutes longer." Lu Cheng nodded toward the other direction. "Forget it. I'll walk you there."
He was only showing her a shortcut, but Wu Tong secretly hoped the road would stretch on a little longer, and then a little longer still.
Once she was on the bus, Wu Tong sneaked a look at him through the window.
The tall, lanky boy leaned lazily against the bus stop, handsome and eye-catching. A tall girl walked up to him. Maybe she was the cousin he'd said was coming to bring him something. She seemed to say something, and then the two of them suddenly looked up in Wu Tong's direction.
Wu Tong hurriedly looked away.
Years later, they met again at college. After they got together, she happened to remember this one day and casually asked him about it.
"She asked me..." Lu Cheng seemed to think back. "If the cute girl I'd just walked to the bus was going to be my future girlfriend."
Wu Tong: "And then?"
The boy still looked as lazy as ever. "I said, 'Yes.'"
"You're making that up." Wu Tong didn't believe him, but she couldn't help smiling.
