Modern woman Yang Liuzui has been having a rough time lately, so she decides to go into the mountains to pray and have her fortune told.

Who could have guessed she'd lose her footing and tumble into a huge karst cave, where she meets a man in a green robe dressed like an ancient, who claims to be the cave's immortal. He is courteous and refined, with impeccable manners.

The woman and the immortal spend nine days together in the cave. Yang Liuzui eventually finds her way out, only to discover that more than ten Taoist temples have been built on the mountain.

When she asks the villagers about the cave immortal, she learns to her astonishment that the temples were all built to suppress a demon. There is no immortal in the cave, only a wicked snake demon.

The male snake demon Ye Qingzhu was enlightened long ago by Xiaoqing, the younger sister of the snake world's idol, Bai Suzhen. But on the eve of his ascension, he was sealed inside a mountain barrier. The only way to escape was to find a mortal who could break his seal.

After waiting eight hundred years, he finally came across an unlucky soul who had wandered into the barrier.

Knowing this was a rare opportunity, he decided to pose as a cave immortal and sweet-talk her into helping him, all while acting courteous and refined.

By the seventh day, they were drinking beside a winding stream, pleasantly tipsy. The woman, so serious when they'd first met, now threw her arms around him and cried out how wonderful life was.

Ye Qingzhu fanned himself and poured her more wine, thinking, I've got this in the bag.

But life is full of surprises. On the eve of his seal being completely undone, she found a way out on her own... and then never came back!

Ye Qingzhu was so furious that he turned back into a snake and crawled all over the cave. As he crawled, a thought suddenly struck him:

If that mortal can leave the cave, then so can he.

But his seal hadn't been completely removed, and Ye Qingzhu's powers were limited. He still couldn't become an immortal.

He had to go into the mortal world and find that woman to see their karmic bond through to the end.

Yang Liuzui doesn't need Fahai to tell her she's been latched onto by a snake demon.

But in the stories, a snake demon comes down the mountain to repay a debt of gratitude. What on earth is this one after, coming to find her?

In any case, in the space of a year, the mess at work was sorted out, and the knots in her love life were untangled. It was as if she'd borrowed a pair of discerning eyes, seeing through hypocrites and recognizing the truly wicked.

On her wedding day, Yang Liuzui finally hardened her heart and broke things off. She didn't run away from the wedding. Instead, she kicked the groom out of the car and ordered Ye Qingzhu to go to the venue and change into a suit.

"But let's get one thing straight," Yang Liuzui asked calmly when they arrived at the wedding hotel. "Why have you been helping me all this time?"

"Maybe it's better if I don't explain too clearly." Ye Qingzhu slowly closed his eyes as he buttoned his jacket.

"After all, I came down the mountain to harm you."
