To avoid being left with nothing after her husband’s family took everything, Yizhu found a down-on-his-luck scholar who had come from out of town to search for his relatives and failed. She asked him to pretend to be her husband.
The two of them huddled together in a tiny house, relying on each other for survival. Yizhu gave him money to continue his studies, on the condition that he repay her tenfold after passing the imperial exams.
Two years later, he passed, and brought her to the capital.
They were no longer confined to that cramped little house. His world had grown vast.
He gave her even more money than he had promised. They no longer had to count out their rice grain by grain or worry that the rain would bring down their earthen walls. They enjoyed the fine clothes and good food they’d once never dared dream of.
Gradually, they saw each other less and less, while their arguments became more and more frequent.
Yizhu was heartbroken to realize that they seemed to have changed.
She had even become someone she barely recognized.
Their marriage had been fake to begin with. Maybe they shouldn’t have let it become real.
She didn’t like her current life or the person she had become. She wanted to take her tenfold repayment and go back home.
·The heroine’s name may change, but this will probably be the title.
