Synopsis
When Shen Zhaoning was nine, her mother died in the northern desert.
As she lay dying, she clutched Shen Zhaoning's hand, her knuckles unnaturally cold. Shen Zhaoning did not cry. She simply clasped her mother's hand in return and said softly, "Mother, I'll take care of myself." From that day on, she had only one resolve: uncover the truth behind her mother's death and clear the Shen family's name.
She grew up amid the windswept sands of the northern desert, learning martial arts from her master and helping her father defend the city. At eleven, she donned armor and went to battle, cutting down enemies and breaking through their lines. When she returned, covered in dust from the march, her father took a closer look and realized that every scar and trace of blood had come from fighting off the enemy.
At fourteen, she stood before her mother's memorial tablet and told her father, "I've made up my mind to return to the capital and uncover the truth. There's no need to try to talk me out of it."
With the keepsake her mother had left behind and formidable martial arts skills she kept carefully concealed, she set out for the capital.
In the capital, princes vied for the throne while powerful families schemed against one another. The Shen family was a family of generals, and a target on the political chessboard. She hid her sharp edges and posed as a frail, harmless orphan from a military family. With her round face, almond-shaped eyes, and utterly unthreatening appearance, she made her moves step by step from the shadows. The white jade bangle passed down by her grandmother symbolized the Shen family's power, and made her a target for everyone; her second uncle's wife and her cousin never stopped testing her, openly or in secret.
She never wasted time trading barbs. Whenever someone came at her with their sharpest edge, she calmly turned them aside, striking only at the crucial moment to break the whole game open.
Then she met Lu Jingheng.
The son of the Prince Who Pacified the Barbarians, and the youngest rising star in the military of Great Yin. At fifteen, he had captured eight cities in succession and made a name for himself while still young. He was a blade the entire capital was trying to figure out, and no one knew which side he would ultimately choose.
He said, "Miss Shen, you smell of windblown sand and weapons."
She did not deny it.
Two people who had hidden their true feelings recognized each other amid the turbulent times. He had not appeared to save her. Instead, for the first time, he made her want to live well.
As she drew closer and closer to the truth, she discovered that her mother's death was no isolated case. It was an old scar hidden deep within the imperial palace and the court, and the person behind it held power and influence.
She was afflicted with a strange poison and knew the road ahead was dangerous. From the day she set out, she had prepared herself for the possibility of never returning.
From the northern desert to the capital, from enemies to confidants, she had walked this road for many years. When someone later asked whether she had ever regretted it, she gave no answer.
The wind blew from the northern desert to the capital for many years. At last, it fell still.
