Story One: Deep in the Palace
I entered the palace.
But not as a palace maid, and certainly not as a consort. I became a eunuch.
But even eunuchs have ranks, and the person I met was one of the highest: handsome and powerful, and somehow able to spend every night in bed with the consorts. He seemed even more impressive than the emperor.
As for me, all I was fit for was keeping watch over them at night and listening in through the walls.
Shamelessly, I begged him to take me away, promising to work like an ox and a horse for him.
He gripped me by the throat and asked what I was after. I couldn't bring myself to say.
Later, he asked, “Why are you always so warm?”
I smiled. “Maybe it's because the capital hasn't gotten cold enough yet.”
Story Two: Boss, Please Smile at Me
I work at a dream-making company.
The day before my probation ends, a coworker takes revenge on our manager by secretly replacing a test dream with a tragic script about ancient times that he wrote himself. The CEO is visiting temporarily and gets trapped in the dream, falling into a coma.
I'm given the urgent task of going into the dream to save him. I have no golden finger, only a “corporate grunt System” that randomly unlocks the plot whenever I get the boss to smile.
So I accompany the boss as we flee from danger, begging him to smile at me once every day.
Just before I die, I say to him, “Mr. Cen, when you wake up, please remember to make me a permanent employee, give me a raise, and pay me my year-end bonus!”
