Blurb:
Xie Yunlan spent a thousand years as a minor god with no worshippers. Sick of the gods in Heaven fighting over merit, he slung half a sack of medicinal seeds over his shoulder and headed straight for Qingzhu Village, the most remote place in Jiuhuang Province. There, he set up a drafty little herb clinic and made ends meet by treating villagers in exchange for coarse grain.
Life was peaceful, but strange things kept happening one after another. A shadow always seemed to follow him through the mountain mist, sobbing could be heard from an abandoned old house in the middle of the night, and an ancient well at the village entrance glowed green after dark.
Whenever he went up the mountain to gather herbs, a man in black would appear to shield him from wild beasts. Whenever evil spirits invaded the village at night, someone would clear them out before he could act.
Even the holes in his padded coat would be clumsily mended with crooked stitches by the next day.
The man wore a silver mask and spoke so little he might as well have had his mouth sewn shut.
Every day, Xie Yunlan roasted an extra half of a coarse-grain cake and passed it through the fence. The man seemed familiar, but Xie Yunlan could never remember where they had met.
Then Heaven came to seize the fragments of the Mountain and Sea Pearl. During the ensuing battle, the mask fell away. Xie Yunlan saw the old scar on the side of the man’s face, and his memories came rushing back.
The little beggar who had sewn the straps on his herb basket in the snow a thousand years ago. The boy who had jumped into the heart of the turbid tide to shield him from it.
The person he had searched for a thousand years, believing his soul had long since dispersed, had been guarding him all along.
Xuanyuan had kept the truth from him for a thousand years.
He had been afraid to remove his mask or draw near, afraid the corruption clinging to him would taint the medicinal fragrance on Xie Yunlan’s sleeves.
But Xie Yunlan didn’t care at all.
He renounced his divine title, tore down the airs of the immortals, and took Xuanyuan by the hand to travel all across Jiuhuang Province: repairing dams, building fortifications, gathering spiritual fragments, and saving the people.
Heaven asked whether he had gone mad, consorting with a monster steeped in corruption.
Squatting by a field ridge and chewing on a coarse-grain cake, Xie Yunlan shot them a sidelong glance. “He’s the person I’ve waited a thousand years for. Who do you think you are?”
A thousand years later, the great turbid tide erupted, and the two of them gave everything they had to seal it away.
The decaying old divine order was abolished, and the new gods were judged by their deeds, not by the incense offered to them. Everyone thought Xie Yunlan would return to Heaven as a savior deity, but instead he turned around and went back with Xuanyuan to the little herb clinic in Qingzhu Village.
When the wind stirred the bamboo leaves, he would squat by the field ridge planting herbs, with someone always there to shield him from the sun.
A warm, freshly roasted coarse-grain cake was placed in his hand. From now on, he would never have to eat one that had gone cold.
[Bonus Scene]
One day, Xie Yunlan was sorting through old belongings when he found half a coarse-grain cake, sealed with spiritual power for a thousand years.
He turned around and saw Xuanyuan, usually so expressionless, blushing at the tips of his ears. Awkwardly, he said, “You gave it to me back then. I couldn’t bring myself to eat it.” Xie Yunlan smiled and leaned in to kiss him. “I’ll bake them for you for the rest of our lives. You can have as many as you want.”
