Synopsis
Jiang Yi is the true daughter of the Jiang family, who was lost as a child and later found. After reclaiming her identity, she relies on a face seven parts similar to her father's to live a pampered, lazy, and utterly uneducated life at the Jiang residence.
Her fiancé, to whom she was betrothed as a child, is a brilliant scholar who came first in the imperial examinations. Yet he always wears a cold expression and has never once treated her kindly.
By chance, Jiang Yi overhears her father and Shen Ju discussing the annulment of her engagement. She interrupts them and makes a solemn vow: from now on, she'll work hard, study through the night, and never bring shame to her father or Shen Ju.
Shen Ju's face is simply too beautiful. She can't give him up.
The wedding takes place as planned, and Jiang Yi gets her wish: she marries into the Shen family. They have no children in their first three years of marriage because he is sent away to serve in another post soon after the wedding.
Three years later, Shen Ju returns, but that night he still sleeps in his study.
Over the years, Jiang Yi has read many books. Her letters to him have gone from illegible scrawls to neat, elegant calligraphy, but none of them ever gets a reply.
At first she sends two letters every three days. In the end, she goes six months without sending a single one. Jiang Yi comes to understand that instead of chasing someone she likes, she might as well find someone who likes her face.
She enters his study for the first time, lays everything out, and tells him that she was temporarily blinded and out of her mind when she clung to him all those years, but now she's willing to set him free.
The man behind the desk still has the same cold face. Jiang Yi feels utterly dejected, takes the divorce papers, and leaves without looking back.
Unfortunately, she doesn't get to enjoy her freedom for long before she suddenly drops dead.
When she opens her eyes again, Jiang Yi is still in the mountain hollow far from the capital. There, she sees someone she never expected: Shen Ju.
After seeing her face and speaking with her foster parents, he decides to take her back to the capital.
The Jiang family will soon come looking for her. Jiang Yi doesn't appreciate his offer and refuses to go with him, but he knocks her out and stuffs her into a carriage.
Back at the Jiang residence, Jiang Yi knows life is short and just wants to lie flat. Her parents dote on her, and she has no objections. But Shen Ju shows up at the Jiang residence every few days, impossible to avoid.
When the time comes for her to call off the engagement, her father still hasn't made a move. Jiang Yi goes to his study and overhears him discussing the wedding date with someone.
Jiang Yi: "??"
She throws open the door. The person seated opposite her father is none other than Shen Ju. He glances at her lightly, his face as cold as ever.
But why are they discussing the wedding date? Weren't they supposed to be calling off the engagement? Frowning, she looks at them, then turns to her father. "Father, I want to end the engagement."
Their conversation interrupted, Jiang Yi is left alone with Shen Ju. He backs her into a corner and says darkly, "End the engagement? I won't agree."
Jiang Yi turns her head away. "I'm uneducated, unambitious, and affected. I'm not worthy of Lord Shen."
Shen Ju frowns. "Who said that?"
Jiang Yi thinks to herself: You did, in my previous life. He never said it aloud, but every expression and every gesture carved those words into her mind.
Jiang Yi pushes him away. "In any case, we're not right for each other. Go ask my father to end the engagement, and we can each go our own way." With that, she leaves without looking back.
The man behind her wears a twisted expression for a moment, then regains his composure and stares fixedly at her retreating figure.
*Both leads are sexually inexperienced. Happy ending.
