In middle school, Su Yili was ostracized by his classmates because of his family situation. They often copied his homework and snatched his stationery. Sometimes, when he returned to his seat, he would find crooked, messy drawings on his desk. Even when it was his turn to clean, he was left to do it alone. Eventually, someone came to inspect the classroom.
"Why are you the only one cleaning?"
Su Yili said nothing, lowering his head as he fiddled with the broom in his hands.
The other person patted his head. "Go home. I've finished scoring the room."
Su Yili walked through the night as snow drifted down all around him. He had no umbrella, so he pulled his hood over his head and walked slowly. When he saw his mother waiting at the entrance, he still couldn't keep from crying.
Suddenly, someone poked him from behind. He turned around.
The boy who had just inspected the classroom smiled at him, holding up an umbrella. "You didn't bring one? You can borrow mine."
Su Yili was about to refuse, but the other boy pressed the umbrella into his hands and gave him a small box, too.
"It's Christmas Eve today. Here's an apple for you. May your life be peaceful and safe from now on."
Later, several of the people who had bullied him transferred schools, and Su Yili found a few people to talk to. The boy who had given him the apple became his good friend, too.
But not long afterward, that boy transferred schools as well.
Su Yili didn't know where he had gone, where he lived, or whether they would ever see each other again.
But he always remembered his name.
Later, when they met again, Yuan Xiche approached him first. "Want me to help you with math?"
"Okay."
"Want to watch a movie together?"
"Okay."
"Want to go on a school trip together?"
"Okay."
"I like you."
"Huh?"
