Gloomy, obsessive, and two-faced male lead x a young prodigy heroine with high offense and low defense (both each other's first and only!)
The story begins in mid-January
Xu Le transmigrates into the cultivation world as its newest number-one talent, born with a sword bone, and goes about righting wrongs wherever she can.
But the System is broken and fails to find her conquest target.
As an exchange student at Jiuxiao Sect, she comes across an injustice and draws her sword to help. The seal beneath the strange beast shatters, revealing a breathtakingly beautiful young man.
Well, would you look at that! He's the very conquest target who's been missing for ages!
You shouldn't pick up men by the roadside, because there's a chance they'll rob and kill you.
Except Xu Le.
After all, she's the one who made a deal with the System to rob and kill him so she can resurrect her beloved.
He wants to break the seal on the villain, but the girl feels no sense of danger at all. Instead, she smiles and says, "Let me help you."
Perhaps Xuan Du's thought process is a little faulty. He actually misunderstands and thinks Xu Le likes him.
Xu Le takes things a step further, deciding to go along with the misunderstanding and make their relationship official.
Since his creation, Xuan Du has never been deceived so cruelly.
He cleansed her of all her malice and learned to act like a proper gentleman. Because he loved her, he set aside his blood feud and forsook his true self, only to fall once more into the fate of being dismembered and having his bones broken apart because of her.
There was nothing wrong with him. It was just that, from beginning to end, he was never her first choice.
When they meet again, she is a vicious criminal, abandoned by everyone, while he is a defiant and unrestrained evil lord.
Their roles have been reversed.
"Xu Le, tell me, when you wake in the middle of the night, have you ever felt even the slightest regret?"
"I won't be foolish enough to beg you for another life with me." He speaks softly. "I only wish to be your retribution, life after life."
* Both leads have only ever been with each other. Happy ending, no third party. The characters' values do not represent the author's.
* There are a few more fight scenes than usual. (How else can I show she's the strongest?)
* The "Le" in Xu Le is pronounced like the word for joy, meaning "May Xu have a lifetime of peace and happiness."
* A little ensemble cast in the early part. From the middle onward: a ghostly male lead and forced love.
* Familial love, romantic love, and friendship are all forms of love.
Theme: Youthful confidence in one's own greatness
