Synopsis
When she was fifteen, He Yumeng met a boy wearing a blue mask in a Shanghai library. They talked about Les Miserables, about fate and choice. The boy said, "Wait for me for seven years." She gave him a plush toy. He gave her a promise, though she didn't know his name or what he looked like.
Seven years later, when they met again, Shen Nian was no longer the boy who had hidden his identity. He was a weapon forged by his mother, bearing the burden of an old family case and living on the edge of a blade. He Yumeng's arrival was the only choice he had ever made for himself. But she didn't know whether her love was the medicine that made him "come alive," or a crutch he could cast aside once he had been "healed."
When Shen Nian finally learned to stand on his own and walk his own path, He Yumeng lost her way. She said, "You don't need me anymore."
This is a story about the difference between "being needed" and "being loved." It traces the long, fraught struggle of two people searching for themselves in each other, and nearly losing themselves in the process. Over ten years, from Shanghai to Beijing to Paris, they make their way through hurt, misunderstanding, betrayal, and breakdown, arriving at something other than "you can't live without me." Instead: even when I no longer need you at all, I still choose you.
Love isn't a lifeline. It's two people who have each grown into their own trees, still choosing to reach for each other's roots.
Theme: Love is not about saving each other, but choosing each other after each has become whole. This is a novel about the difference between "being needed" and "being loved." Before meeting He Yumeng, Shen Nian was a weapon forged by his mother: a precise machine operating to clear his family's name, with no will of his own and no ability to feel warmth. He Yumeng's arrival let him feel, for the first time, what it meant to be alive. Without realizing it, she became the medicine he depended on to breathe, and for a time he thought that was love.
But here's the question: if you love someone for the "function" they provide, does that love still hold when you no longer need that function? Shen Nian fought hard to grow. At last, he learned to stand alone, breathe alone, and walk his own path. He thought he had finally become "worthy" of her, but he didn't realize that once he no longer needed her support, she had lost the only way she knew to confirm her place in the relationship: "being needed." She fell into an even deeper predicament: I pulled him out of the ruins, but I was left behind in them.
That is the true weight of this story. It explores one of the cruelest and most honest questions in a relationship: is the person who awakened you fated to pay the price of being forgotten in the dark after you come into your own?
The story's answer is this: true love isn't clinging to someone to prove your own existence, nor anchoring your worth in being needed. It is two people who have each grown complete roots, yet still choosing to grow in the same direction. What Shen Nian ultimately learns is not "I can't live without her," but "I can live well, and I choose to be with her."
Love isn't about filling each other's gaps. It's two whole people, each standing in their own place, still reaching out to hold on to the other.
