Reincarnation [A Ghost Story: Love's Carnage Fanfic]

Everything is still undecided before I begin writing. This is a fanwork based on New Ghost Story Online.

The original work is by Shi Li Qing Bai, searchable on Jinjiang Literature City. On Weibo, tag @ShiLiQingBaiBaiLe.

Main pairing: Tan Wuxin x Yin Ziping

[These characters aren't mine, so I can't just make up their personalities. Sorry.]

Background and plot setup:

After Tan Wuxin dies, Yin Ziping opens a clinic on her own and treats the sick. She gradually grows old and dies, then enters the cycle of reincarnation. In her next life, she becomes a disciple of a martial artist and sets out to investigate the "murders at the clinic." She meets a puppet containing only a wisp of Tan Wuxin's residual soul and feels inexplicably familiar with it.

After the investigation is over, she meets an old acquaintance again. They meet, but do not recognize one another.

Just then, chaos erupts in the Ghost Realm. Meng Po falls off the Bridge of Helplessness after being struck, briefly losing her memory. The cycle-of-reincarnation gate in the Ghost Realm opens by mistake, and Tan Wuxin's soul returns to the mortal world with it. Drawn to the residual soul left behind from his previous life, his soul fuses completely with the puppet, but he still cannot move freely. His soul has been severely damaged and remains incomplete, and his memories are affected as well. Once the Ghost Realm has fully repaired him, he can move freely, but he still cannot recover his memories.

The Ghost Realm's influence reaches Yin Ziping too. The waters of the River of Forgetfulness mingle with Meng Po's soup, causing some mortals who have already reincarnated to regain memories of their past lives. Yin Ziping regains her memories the night before she leaves the clinic.

By then, Tan Wuxin has already forgotten Yin Ziping. He only has a vague feeling that she is familiar. At last, on the eve of dawn, he remembers everything. But just before the two of them are about to recognize each other, the Great Emperor of Fengdu orders the Ten Kings of Hell and their subordinates to retrieve the wandering spirits that have been dispersed throughout the mortal world.

Black and White Impermanence lead Tan Wuxin's soul back. Yin Ziping is only a mortal and cannot interfere with the situation in the Ghost Realm. At the very moment his soul is taken back, Meng Po recovers and uses a spell to retrieve all the memories scattered across the mortal world. Tan Wuxin's soul returns to the Ghost Realm and cannot enter the cycle of six reincarnations, while half a wisp of his soul remains inside the puppet.

After losing her memories of her past life, Yin Ziping follows her plan and returns to her master. From then on, she upholds justice and wanders the martial world.

!!! Please note:

[The chaos in the Ghost Realm will not be explained in great detail, as it could muddle the game's timeline. This is a standard fanwork, so it will not change the background story. The setting remains the late Ming dynasty as in the game. Aside from reincarnation, everything else related to the game follows the game's canon.]

[In this fanwork, and only in the one I'm writing, the two are about to recognize each other, but Tan Wuxin's soul is taken back and their memories fade, so they never get the chance. The puppet stays in the clinic, while Yin Ziping wanders the martial world.]

[Perhaps the puppet knows everything. It can sense Yin Ziping whenever she comes near the clinic. But unfortunately, Yin Ziping has no memories of her past life in this life, and probably won't return to the area around that clinic. She will never know that in her previous life, she created the clinic with her own hands and lived there with her "partner." The clinic was rumored to be haunted because of a misunderstanding and malicious gossip.]

[Perhaps, for Tan Wuxin, this is a different kind of letting go. At least this accident brought him back to the human world and let him see the person he loves again. The only regret is that he can only watch Yin Ziping from across the two realms, and will never enter the cycle of six reincarnations.]

[May New Ghost Story Online keep growing, growing stronger, and becoming better and better, and be loved by more players! - Shi Li Qing Bai]

The above is the fanwork's setup and background story. I hope everyone will keep the game at the center and live their own lives well. Fanworks can be a pastime, or a way to fill in a lingering regret, but the game is what matters most. Please enjoy your games to the fullest!
