As a descendant of the former imperial family, Shu Zhao was taken by her mother to live in seclusion in the mountains from a young age.
Five years after her mother's death, the world fell into chaos. On her way home, Shu Zhao found the gravely wounded and amnesiac General Zhuyun, the Defender of the North.
By the usual conventions of romance stories, this should have been the beginning of a tale of love and hatred between her and the general, ending either in a happy union or a tragic death.
Unfortunately, a capable and ambitious schemer will choose a third path for herself.
Shu Zhao decided to take advantage of the general's amnesia, wield power and govern in his name, then climb to the very top.
She trained women officials, won people's loyalty, and built up her influence.
Only when Zhuyun was besieged by the imperial court and Shu Zhao led troops to rescue him did she suddenly realize that the general had regained his memories long ago. Yet, for reasons unknown, he had remained silent, letting her gradually take control of his power base.
On the eve of her ascension to the throne, Zhuyun finally confessed his feelings while drunk, asking whether he could become her emperor consort.
The new emperor smiled and leaned down to whisper in the ear of her general, the guardian of her realm. "Of course."
