After losing her mother, Letis became a complete orphan in the slums.
To keep from starving, she had no choice but to turn to her aunt at a convent and become a novice nun.
Life as a nun was hard.
Heavy robes, tedious prayers, and the abbess’s strict discipline.
Letis loved services most of all. Then she could sit beside the priest and listen to the young, handsome man recite scripture.
She breathed in his fragrant scent, watched his beautiful lips, and listened to his melodious voice.
The scripture he read said that they were God’s brides and must remain pure forever.
No, no.
Letis thought, she had never even seen God’s face, and she didn’t like Him. How could she be His bride?
Watching the priest’s angelic face, Letis made up her mind to become the priest’s bride instead.
But the priest flew into a rage. He looked at her as though she were a demon.
Letis was locked in the confessional. Kneeling beside her, the priest told her to repent to God with him.
Repent for what? Letis had no idea.
All she knew was that if the priest refused, she would have to find a way to become someone else’s bride.
The seminarians shyly avoided her, and the abbess sent her to solitary confinement to reflect again and again.
At last, one day, her dream came true. A generous nobleman accepted her proposal.
Best of all, the man was as handsome as the priest.
Letis was overjoyed.
At last, she wouldn’t have to be God’s bride!
On the eve of her long-awaited wedding, an uninvited guest arrived at the estate.
The priest, drenched, knocked on Letis’s door.
His expression was dark and brooding. Just as he had in the confessional, he knelt beside her and tightly grasped her lower leg beneath her nightgown. Ignoring her trembling, he kissed it reverently.
“Letis, you were right. God doesn’t exist. You should be my bride.”
The nobleman emerged from the shadows and watched coldly.
“You’re too late. Letis is already my bride.”
