A blade tore through the air, its edge aimed straight at Xie Yan's face.
Lu Chen abruptly pulled him behind himself and blocked the blade with his bare hand. It grazed his forearm, drawing blood. The assassin's strike missed, and they escaped through the window.
Xie Yan stepped forward with some iodine antiseptic. He didn't hold back: "I told you to be careful, and you still got hurt."
Lu Chen merely answered with a cool, "Mm."
The two had never gotten along. Lu Chen didn't trust Xie Yan, the portrait expert sent in from the provincial public security department, while Xie Yan found him stubborn and rigid.
The roots of this sudden attack could be traced back to the eerily clean murder case from four days earlier.
Lu Chen, leader of the major crimes unit in the city's criminal investigation squad, leads the team in locking down the scene. Cold and unyielding, he believes only in evidence.
But then Xie Yan arrives as the new deputy leader, wielding sharp words and targeting the heart.
One locked-room murder, one kidnapping case involving an internet celebrity: the two go from being at each other's throats to entrusting their lives to one another.
Lu Chen can reconstruct the truth from the tiniest trace, while Xie Yan can see into people's hearts in the depths of an abyss.
They are the police force's two finest, each other's one and only weakness, and their sharpest weapons.
As the shadow of a cross-city criminal organization falls over the city, and the scars of an old case are torn open once more,
they stand side by side against evil, weaving an inescapable net from traces and psychology.
