Beginning in the Ming Dynasty, large numbers of young women in the Yangzhou area were specially trained to become concubines to wealthy merchants. These women considered slenderness beautiful and were all slim and thin, so they came to be known as "Yangzhou Slender Horses." This story is set during the Longqing and Wanli eras of the Ming Dynasty. It features the incense-making and incense-appreciation practices that were all the rage at the time, as well as detailed descriptions of clothing, food, festivals, furnishings, and utensils.
