He Mian transmigrates into a mechanical age overrun by insectoids, where humanity has gone extinct. Food is not a necessity here.
At a scrap-metal dump, she finds a man charging with his eyes closed.
He has gentle features and an elegant air, like a young gentleman from an eminent family. His arms feel like real human skin, yet they're cold. Only the beating heart in his chest is warm. Beneath his collar is a serial number: 7001.
What a beautifully made robot!
He seems to mistake her for a phased-out companion robot, and takes meticulous care of her.
With 7001 by her side, she manages to find food and survive.
He says, "You have not passed the interference-resistance stability test. You may purchase an additional aid to maintain your balance, such as a cane or a wheelchair."
He says, "You don't need to worry about the money. I can pay."
He says, "Companion robots often feel anxious, but that's only a programmed setting, not a real emotion."
That's right. His gentle, considerate nature comes with a sense of distance. It's all just programming. She shouldn't lose herself in these false feelings.
She carefully guards her secret and does her best to keep herself in good shape.
Until she's injured, blood staining half her trouser leg from the outside of her thigh. 7001 loses his composure, his eyes bloodshot as he punches a mutated giant insect into the mud again and again.
Her robot... has gone out of control.
7001 once foolishly believed that companion robots were programmed to be weaker in every way. They had no instinct to attack, and all their responses were gentler.
That belief is shattered after he meets He Mian. He wants to be with her, watch over her, and protect her every moment.
He must have caught a virus. That's the only reason he would develop the urge to possess her.
Until he discovers that something is far more terrifying than a virus: humanity. The prime directive carved into a robot's code is that humans come first.
And yet he follows her with an ever more peaceful heart.
Why should robots imitate the human navel? To a robot, it's completely useless. 7001 doesn't understand. Robots should discard useless features.
He Mian says, "Isn't it strange not to have a navel?"
His gaze settles perfectly on her taut, defined muscles.
Her warm hand rests on 7001's waist.
His mechanical heart beats faster, and the sensation at his fingertips is unbearable, like ants crawling over him.
7001's gaze darkens. "Please... don't tease me!"
Humans gave robots the ability to think, but their likes and dislikes aren't real. Yet humans cannot control everything, including the robots they create., An Engineer's Notes
