To You, My Dear

I imagine that Mr. Lu, back in Florence, must have had an exceptionally tender heart. He knew I had never been there, so he never brought it up.

I watched my feelings for him gather, day after day, grain by grain, then swell like countless rivers flowing into the sea, so vast they seemed ready to become a poem.

"Did you know me before? Did I forget something?"

"No."

He didn't lie to me, but he didn't tell me either: there was no past life. We had simply met in this very life, which I had overlooked. We met by chance, fell in love, and loved each other for a lifetime.
