At the dawn of the dynasty, the founding emperor joined forces with the Celestial Masters to quell demons and evil spirits. After establishing the country, he created the Xu Jing Bureau to handle supernatural affairs across the realm.
By the Yongning era, corruption had taken root in the highest reaches of government, while evil spirits were stirring in the distant corners of the martial world.
The orphaned A You was adopted as a child by an old Celestial Master, who gave her the Taoist name Xuanwei.
She recited slogans every day about slaying demons, vanquishing evil, and protecting the people, yet felt none of it had anything to do with her.
All she wanted was to stay by the old Celestial Master's side and live a carefree life.
But everything changed when she was nine.
People from the Xu Jing Bureau asked the old Celestial Master to come out of seclusion and subdue a demon. He left and never returned, vanishing without a trace.
Ten years later, Xuanwei received a blood-written letter directing her deep into the mountains of western Hunan.
In the vast mountains, miasma fills the air, the Miao people make sacrifices, and mountain demons claim lives.
To find her master's whereabouts, Xuanwei beats down the senior fellow disciple blocking her way and finally sets out on the long road of demon-slaying.
But people from all sides, each with their own schemes, arrive one after another.
The strangest of them all, in Xuanwei's eyes, is the male demon who looks exactly like her senior fellow disciple.
The first time he met Xuanwei, she slit a mountain demon's throat with her sword, then turned to him and said,
"See? I'm very good at this. It won't hurt."
The second time they met, she smashed a giant serpent's skull with one punch, then ordered him,
"Dig out the inner core and wrap it up for me. Keep your eyes open."
The third time they met, she was killing someone and carrying away the body, and once again, he caught her in the act.
Watching the smile in her eyes, Shaoyu silently picked out a nice spot and started digging a grave.
Sure enough, she was a murderous, thieving Taoist swindler!
Note:
1. Plot-driven.
2. An imaginary ancient setting. Please don't nitpick the historical details.
3. A powerful female lead whose combat skills are off the charts. The male lead is no mere background character and has yin-yang eyes.
4. The female lead is a gentleman; the male lead is even more twisted than he seems.
