Synopsis
[Warm on the outside, cold within, celebrated courtesan of the music bureau × gentle, scheming Jiangnan tycoon]
She thinks his kindness is only meant to make her loyal to him, so she dares not speak of her love.
He thinks she is merely a key pawn in his grand plan, so he cannot bring himself to confess his love.
Xiao Qingyue is the top musician in the first division of the music bureau. She knows all too well how to flatter people with her performances and sweet talk.
The powerful praise her as clever and graceful, but she knows that this false face is what she hates most about herself.
Yet she is registered as a criminal's property, and buying back her freedom is something she would never dare dream of.
Then, against all odds, it happens.
Shen She is a wealthy Jiangnan silk trader with immense influence. He spends a hundred thousand strings of coins to buy her freedom, without even appearing in person.
But Xiao Qingyue isn't happy. She can't believe a tycoon would spend so much to buy a troublesome woman unless he wanted her for her looks.
Just as she expected, he gives her a new identity and makes her his personal musician. He asks her to work with him to uncover the culprit behind the White Jade Case from years ago.
He tells her she should never have been branded a criminal in the first place, and that the White Jade Case was a massive frame-up.
He tells her that if she sincerely helps him, he will free her after a year, whether or not they succeed.
He tells her that even though she is his personal musician, he will prepare a separate residence just for her, and that she will be an honored guest in his home.
He treats her so well that she almost forgets she was born into a lowly status.
Xiao Qingyue understands that all of this is just a calculated ploy to win her over, a merchant's usual trick to make a pawn easier to use.
So she finds a way to leave herself a means of protection.
But she still falls in love with him.
“This concubine was bought by you, my lord. I will do anything you ask of me.”
She always says this, but Shen She has never believed her. He knows she is shrewd and that she has always been wary of him, though her position means she dares not say so openly.
Still, as long as she is willing to work for him, that is enough. A useful pawn deserves to be well cared for, so it can serve its greatest purpose in the end.
So when another merchant tries to seduce Xiao Qingyue right in front of him, Shen She smiles on the surface, then secretly sends the authorities evidence of the man's smuggling and has his family arrested.
His bodyguard asks, “Boss, why are you suddenly wiping out the Chen family? They haven't caused us any trouble, have they?”
He calmly flips through the account book, dismissing the matter. “I was just getting rid of some filthy trash while I was at it. Think of it as doing the people a favor.”
