A midsummer afternoon, with the occasional chirp of cicadas.
Xie Shile stood beneath the shade of a tree, giving an impromptu violin lesson over a bet that had nothing to do with him.
Pei Hui sat nearby, his heartbeat plucked in time with the strings by Xie Shile.
Only later did he understand that he had fallen in love with Xie Shile at first sight.
Years passed before Pei Hui saw Xie Shile again. The once-glamorous dancer was now confined to a wheelchair.
A thin gauze bandage was wrapped around his eyes, as if he were sensitive to light.
Pei Hui stood in the doorway, unsure whether he should step inside.
Xie Shile couldn't understand why the delivery worker stood there without saying a word. After a brief silence, he spoke up. "You can leave it here."
Steering his wheelchair backward, Xie Shile made room and gestured for the "delivery worker" to come in.
Pei Hui's heart twisted with pain, as if he were breaking apart too.
Two days later, through an introduction from an elder, Xie Shile met a new caregiver.
